"Open Air Campaigners"

Paul Adams

Street preachers: those loud mouthed negative misfits yelling at you through a megaphone; weirdos carrying badly lettered signs telling you you're going to hell. Seen one you've seen 'em all, right? Wrong.

Paul Adams is a missionary with the Open Air Campaigners. Doesn't have a megaphone. Doesn't have a loud mouth. Doesn't yell at people. Doesn't carry signs or wear sandwich boards.

Paul works primarily in the Baltimore - Washington area, with a special focus on reaching students at the University of Maryland. The University of Maryland has a student body from all over the world. Many of these students are from countries that are "closed" to the Gospel, meaning they do not allow missionaries in or for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be proclaimed. When they come to America, many of them enter a spiritual quest, to try to discover as much as they can about the West and its values and philosophies.

When Paul sets up his sketchboard and begins painting, within minutes a curious crowd gathers to see what it is he is painting. Then, while painting, he begins to share a brief and concise Gospel message. The painting becomes an illustration of the message he is bringing and a point of reference for discussions with students afterwards.

Another specialty of Open Air Campaigners is the outreach to children, particularly those in crowded inner city projects. Paul has a heart for these children who, many times are without adequate parental supervision, and will end up being crime statistics before they are grown. Working with local churches, he organizes outreaches and even trains local workers in how to reach into these difficult areas.
