Israel was in a time of battle and they were being attacked by the Philistines. The Philistines had been attacking all the neighborhood countries and were coming against God’s people. The Philistines would send forth their spoilers that would just steal, rob and plunder, causing havoc and confusion wherever they went, and most of God’s people were all in the same boat afraid and ashamed. That’s until God moved on someone to do something. Like Israel, you and I have enemies in life, things that are coming against us and factors that are hindering our spiritual lives. These are things that work against us in our jobs and forces that are trying to wreck our homes and our families which ultimately begin to destroy our health and spoil our relationships. The Bible tells us in 1 Samuel 14 that most of God’s people were scared and didn’t know what to do to stop the enemy from destroying their lives and even their leaders were paralyzed by fear. Jonathan, King Saul’s son, was determined to not be a victim of the enemy and he and his armor bearer wanted to do more than just complain about their enemies. Instead, they wanted to do more than just talk about victory, they wanted to live in victory.
So, he decided to DO SOMETHING about his situation, something drastic. He knew that he couldn’t fight his battles in his own strength, but instead, he needed the Lord to fight his battles. The Lord wants to work for you and see Jonathan knew this basic truth, one that you and I need to remind ourselves of and that is, there’s no restraint with God. Luke 1:37, “Nothing shall be impossible with God!” I hope everyone understands that. Sometimes we look at our situation and we go into despair, but our God is not limited by our situation, what I see, what I hear and what other people are saying or doing. Here’s what Jonathan was saying: “My God can save by many or by few.” Think about that. He’s not limited by money, lack or distance. NOTHING CAN STOP THE LORD! He’ll work for me and there’s no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few. It’s easy to think that you won’t ever be very blessed because you don’t seem to have too much going for you but God in James that He has chosen the POOR of THIS world to be RICH in faith. He’s chosen the poor of the natural world to be rich in the supernatural.
You might not have much faith and I used to think that I would have to sit by the road in life, living like a beggar due to me not having much faith. Then the Lord brought me to Galatians 2:20, where I found that I didn’t have to be limited by my lack of faith any longer. See, my faith is weak, limited and goes up and down. When I discovered Galatians 2:20, I found out something: I don’t have to live by MY faith and longer, but I can live by His faith! By the faith of the Son of God and I learned how to lay aside my faith and enter into Jesus’s faith. Be transformed by renewing your mind and that’s what we’re doing right now. 2 Corinthians 4:18 tells us that we get changed in life according to what we look at. You’ve got to get your eyes off of your situation and stop looking at your problem! 1 Peter 5:7 tells you to roll your problems and your cares on the Lord because He cares for you. You’re not designed to carry your problems, the more you end up operating by fear instead of faith. Fear sees the worst and fear experiences those bad things that haven’t even happened yet. Fear causes you to not even try because you know how bad it feels to try and then fail and that’s why you’re upset and grumpy about things and shouldn’t be.
When you’re up at night pacing the floor because of your problems, remember that we’re dealing with the One who neither slumbers nor sleeps. Since He’s not sleeping, you might as well go back to bed, no sense in both of you staying up. What the holy Spirit would say to you. Jonathan’s armor bearer said, “Do all that is in thine heart. Turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.” That’s how the Holy Spirit is in our lives and He’s our Armor Bearer saying to you, “Do all that’s in thine heart! I am WITH thee according to thy heart.” You can limit God by your small ideas about His ability and like a goldfish put into a tiny little bowl is limited by the bowl. If you walk by sight, God’s abilities will be small in you and if you walk by faith, His power will be great in you. Don’t let your emotions limit your faith. You have to decide to do what’s in your heart, not your head. That’s where God is, in your heart. Psalm 37:4 says for you to delight yourself in the lord and He’ll give you the desires of your heart. Proverbs 23:9, as a person thinketh in his heart, so is he. Not as he thinketh in his head. What are you in your heart? A teacher? Servant of God? Or Evangelist? Whatever it is, that’s you. Don’t limit God. See, that’s what the Israelites did in Psalm 78:40-41. God was wanting to lead them out, but they LIMITED the Holy One of Israel.
Jesus is saying to you like He said to the blind man in Mark 10:51, “What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?” That blind man had a need and he needed to hear from God to receive a touch. He didn’t think he had anything or any way to help his situation but he had 2 things, faith and God. You have to use what you have to get what you need then you’ll be able to do what God’s put into your heart. That’s the kind of seed faith that brings the Lord on the scene to bless and deliver. You never know what’s in a seed until you plant it. You never know what’s inside of YOU until you sow your life into Jesus, DIE to self and live to Him. That’s when you begin to bring forth fruit and the potential of the seed is never released until it’s in the ground. Your potential is never released until you sow your life into Jesus and faith without works is dead. No matter what’s in your heart, no fruit comes until you plant the seed. It’s what ever you sow that determines what you reap. Draw near to God and let Him draw near to you. Take the limits off God and obey the spirit of God in your heart. Remove those hinderances, weights and run the course. Give God room to work and take off limits and Him deliver because you’re a child of God.
